Current status of the modernization of the Dortmund traffic station The main construction work for the modernization of the traffic station at Dortmund Central Station has been running since summer 2018. First platform 8 (tracks 26/31) was dismantled and renewed. The same procedure has also been used for this platform as for platform 7 at the moment. The modernized platform 8 has been in operation since September 2019 and since mid-February 2020, travelers can also use the new elevator

Until March 17, travelers at platform 7 saw a big hole in the ceiling when they looked up from the underpass. But the view of the open sky is now closed again with heavy material so that travelers can enter platform 7 again in the future. The underpass was closed to the travelers since 9 p.m.

Initially, four precast beams were installed on the ceiling. With a length of 13.8 meters and a weight of 14 tons each, they had to be lifted individually from the tracks with a crane. These beams form the basis for further work: Because 13 so-called “filigree slabs” (dimensions 1.15 meters x 4.50 meters) were then placed on the precast beams.

"The lifts will also be installed at the end of the other platforms," says Nicole Becker, project manager for the modernization of the Dortmund traffic station. "First the platform bridge has to be finished and then, when the platform is almost finished, the elevator installation starts."

From the northernmost platform 8, work now continues southwards, currently on tracks 21/23 and finally on tracks 2/3. Since the start of construction, the entire technology for the telecommunications systems (PA and passenger information) has also been renewed. The new video technology has already been installed in the reception building, and travelers can also connect via WLAN in the station building.

Reconstruction of the central station on schedule The station will be completely barrier-free after the modernization has been completed. 14 escalators and seven new elevators will ensure that travelers can get to the platform in future without having to climb stairs. Until the planned completion in 2024, the work will run under the "rolling wheel", ie while the railroad is running.

"So far, the travelers have had no restrictions on train traffic," said Jörg Seelmeyer, DB's station manager for the Dortmund area. "And the most important thing is that the modernization will finally make the main train station barrier-free. Dortmund is one of the most modern transport stations in North Rhine-Westphalia! "

The platforms are each 76 centimeters high to enable stepless entry into the trains. All platforms are given new coverings, blind guards and platform roofs. The lighting and sound reinforcement will also be expanded - in addition, new weather shelters on the platforms will also protect travelers from wind and rain.

The underpass (PU) should be significantly wider - from currently 9.50 meters to over 13 meters. The PU also has a bright, modern wall covering. The total investment amounts to around 130 million euros, borne by the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Deutsche Bahn.
